Portrait: Patch Ferber

Being over at OSGrid and "Wickenshire" I met Patch Ferber and we talked a bit about herself and the region. She agreed on having me publishing the answers on the questions I have had

Hyperzette:
When did you start your career in Virtual Worlds and as I think it might have been SL ?

Patch:
In November of 2006, "Good Morning America" did a piece on Second Life.  It looked very interesting and I logged in that same day, and have been in virtual worlds ever since.  As far as starting a career, well that came a lot later. I spent the first year in Second Life learning how to change clothes and possibly, create a cube/box. I was fascinated by the 3-D effect on a 2-D screen, and that fascination has held me here ever since. I am amazed by the graphics. I wanted to build at a very young (virtual) age, but it took me forever to get the hang of it.  I have had the good fortune of fantastic friends who helped me along.  Having always been a homebody and loving houses and furniture, that was what I wanted to do.
I began to dabble in building in about 2007, and I was even given some small areas to sell my stuff in other people's store.  I'm not sure exactly, but sometime in 2008, Master Dubrovna gave me my own store in Durdane, Second Life.  I was still learning. Full perm textures and sculpts were expensive.  The store hung on for years, but it did not make enough to even pay the tier--which was putting it mildly.

Hyperzette:
When and why did you change from SL to OSGrid ?

Patch:
It was, I believe, again in around 2008 when Master Dubrovna told me of another grid like Second Life, and we went there to check it out. I was totally and completely impressed. I thought Linden Lab had the market on 3-D virtual worlds and had no idea they could exist outside of Second Life. The transition from Second Life to OSGrid was so gradual, we hardly saw it coming. Master Dubrovna was soon running multiple servers in OSGrid, and I was the lucky one to be his partner. I finally convinced Master to sell the land in Second Life, and I would bring my furniture to OSGrid to share with others for free.  (It wasn't selling anyway, why not have some fun.)  I could not have done any of this without Master Dubrovna's knowledge of how to run servers and do it, extremely well.

Hyperzette:
Being at "Wickenshire" one of the dominant buildings is your furniture store. Are you specialist in furniture and home decoration or are there other creations carrying your name tag ?

Patch:
Yes, I am absolutely a specialist in furniture and home décor.  I cannot take credit for the sculpts that I use, but I use full perm sculpts and a lot of imagination.

Hyperzette:
What was the reason to set up "Wickenshire" ?

Patch:
Originally, in Second Life, it was set up for fun and to make money.  Now it is strictly for fun.  Creativity is its own reward.  My quote by Rainer Maria Rilke says it best:  "If your daily life seems poor, do not blame it;  blame yourself,  that you are not poet enough to call forth its riches;  for to the creator there is no poverty and no poor indifferent place."

Hyperzette:
Is "Wickenshire" the only region owned by you ?

Patch:
Wickenshire region is owned by Master Dubrovna.  He has also given me 4 regions of my own to have houses and decorate.  He also provides regions for our other Wickenshire partners, for their personal use.  Master Dubrovna is, and always has been, generous beyond belief.  He is kind, fair, understanding, and lets me do "my own thang" without criticism or interference.  I really admire that in him.  He has taught me, through his example, the true meaning of fairness and professionalism.  And in addition to this, he is a kick-ass builder who can show me how to fix my creations when they go wrong!  What more can I say?  He is the absolute best!

Hyperzette:
Are you to be found in other grids than OSGrid ?

Patch:
Oh yes, I love to check out the new grids, but the only one, beside OSGrid, that I have found to be of any substance, is Inworldz.

Hyperzette:
Any plans for the future in virtual worlds ?

Patch:
My plan, and I think Master's as well, is to just keep this good thing going for as long as we can.

Hyperzette:
One last word (advice) for the residents within the Hypergrid, maybe ?

Patch:
We have recently turned off hypergrid at Wickenshire, and this does give a lot of mixed feelings for us and for hypergridders as well.  My thoughts on doing this was that we want to promote OSG, as a grid, first and foremost.  We also want to promote open sim as well, but in the last few years OSG has declined, and that was very sad.  Our Wickenshire group feels it is the best grid in open sim, but of course, it is our home, so we are a bit prejudice.  The competition now is fierce and I hope that will make all grids do their best and promote the open sim concept.
